CANGGU TWILIGHT

Ji is a box of curiosities starting from the first steps. How to enter it, which door to pick – the Gate of Heaven, the Gate of Hate or the Gate of Love? Choices, choices…one thing you need to know for sure, whichever entrance you choose, you gonna end up in paradise anyways!

Once you finally make your mind and pass one of the antique wooden doors, get ready to be blown away. The restaurant is housed in an original ancient Kang Xi period temple from 1706. This 310-years-old gem from Java was almost demolished in the 1990s when the famous antique collector Anhar Setjadibrataand found it. He moved the rare beauty to Bali and painstakingly reconstructed it at Hotel Tugu. Now it’s fully back in all its glory: elegant dark wood, mysterious carvings, mythological animals all over the roof and ceiling, numerous artefacts scattered around for you to discover. Definitely not your average dining room!

The interior of Ji might be full-on Chinese but the menu is Japanese – yet another surprise! The food is as elegant and delicate as the interior it’s being served in. The sushi and rolls are to die for, and the mains – think black cod in yellow miso with a shio koji glaze, tender grilled octopus with Japanese crème fraiche, grilled scallops with yuzu butter – will leave even the fuzziest foodie deeply satisfied.

We can guarantee – you gonna pick every single drop of sauce, it’s that good! Life is short, lick that plate.

Like almost every dining destination in Canggu, Ji is pretty versatile. It’s ok if you are heading from the beach, salt in hair and sunburned cheeks, dying to have your sushi craving fixed. Walk in barefoot and go to the upper floor terrace for some artfully-crafted sundowners and a mouthwatering dragon roll. The sunset view is the best in the area, and so are your sushi.

Then there are more romantic, all-glam occasions Ji is simply perfect for. There is literally nothing better for a secret date than hiding in the Kabuki theatre inspired booth with your fatal attraction-of-the-moment. Throw your silk kimono on, even high heels maybe, and come spend a perfect night in the sultry, sexy bar enjoying the finest sake and wines from all around the world. Don’t forget the signature cocktails! We won’t lie saying they come with a touch of magic, just like everything in this place: no spoilers, get your own to see them in action!
