“You be like ‘No way’, we be like, ‘Told u so!'” – the menu of Mudra, our new favorite little cafe in Ubud makes us giggle all the way. It’s as witty (‘People who consume lemongrass tend to die less often’, jackfruit smoothie called Jack The Tripper...OK we promise to stop now!) as it is mouthwatering. They say their food is based on the Ayurvedic principles but although it sounds New Age enough for a restaurant in Ubud, it doesn’t require a wide-open third eye to dig it. In fact, it has all the things you love: chicken, fish, dairy and eggs, but combined in a smart way. Take Uttapam breakfast, for instance: the silky duck eggs cooked sous-vide style (organic, of course, you silly!) come with an Indian fluffy black rice pancake, perfectly crispy potato resti and avocado slices, so it’s creamy, crunchy, mellow and spicy at the very same time – perfection. And don’t even start us on their Avogasm Toast!

Lunch brings you curries, and it’s a struggle to choose just one. The owner’s family originates from Malaysia so the Baba Nyonya cuisine influence is quite strong here. Hence the roti menu as well: the traditional Malay hand-thrown flatbread comes with all the surprising fillings – think gorgonzola!

Mudra guys take their coffee very seriously too. First, they use only local, ethically grown beans. Secondly, they do all the roasting themselves, getting their beans just right in micro-batches, few times a day. They can serve your daily dose with any kind of milk – from regular full cream to goats milk to soy to homemade cashew. All types of coffee weirdos are welcome here! ?
