If you live in Bali and haven’t heard of Made J, then you most probably have zero interest in island’s music scene. This guy is a real Bali rockstar, our very own Jack White and Jimi Hendrix, who has a pet devil living in between the strings of his guitar. He has been busy travelling the world, signing the contracts in Europe, releasing the new albums, rubbing shoulders with some of the musical icons and breaking girls’ hearts, yet he has found some time to finally open his own bar/live gig club in Canggu (where else?).
It’s called Gimme Shelter, same as the Rolling Stones’ smashing hit, one of those anthems that made the year of 1969 so special. You might call it a bar, but it’s way more than just another watering hole (Canggu has plenty of those). Made J has built a temple for his own rebellious rock’n’roll soul and this guy is on the mission to expose the best Indonesia’s rock scene has on offer by bringing the most curious, wild and raw musicians to play on his stage.
It’s all about the experience: ride along the dark street, find a stand alone house with almost no sign and some brutally-looking security guys chain-smoking outside. Walk through the heavy “theater” curtains and find yourself in another dimension, which feels almost like Twin Peaks kind of scene. On a big night, there will be some true local rockers hanging around, with their authentic hand-poked tattoos and pierced faces, mixed with the bearded hipsters and other representatives of Canggu’s signature crowd. The bands whom Made J hand-pick and invite to play are mostly loud, heavy and fun – the genres vary from rockabilly (did you know we have our own Elvis in Bali?) to death metal. There are no fancy cocktails in the bar, only honest, old school, straight-forward spirits with mixers and venue’s specialty poison called Bensin – give it a try if you dare, and blend in!
