Why going to an average [read between the lines: bo-o-o-ring!] supermarket when you can go to the Japanese one? There is only one Japanese grocery shop in Bali – Papaya Fresh Gallery, and trust us, it’s the locals’ best-kept secret. Consider that: a spotless clean, almost to the hospital grade, environment; the ‘exotic’ fruits and veggies like tiny crunchy cucumbers, always perfectly ripe avocados (how do they do it?!), gazillion of various mushroom types (more than you know for sure), and so on. They have homemade kimchee. Homemade onigiri. Mochi. A dozen of tofu options. Huge selection of sauces and vinegars. The panda-looking soft rolls. A curious foodie’s heaven!
And now, the most important moment: the FISH. They are Japanese-owned and oriented so one can guess the fish quality is the top priority here. The staff working in the seafood department looks more like surgeons in their spotless white uniform, jiggling the sharpest knives. Three extra-large refrigerators are packed with sashimi-grade snapper and glossy tuna fillets, octopus tentacles, and sushi of all sorts.
Needless to say, these are one of the best sushi and rolls on the island! Always fresh, made with the best quality fish, they smell and taste like Japan itself. You can grab a couple of boxes to go (they will pack your takeaway with a few packets of ice to keep it cool) or – if you’re anything like us and can’t wait – eat them at the supermarket cafe. The best thing? After 8pm all the sushi are -50% off! They have more exciting promos: how about the one called “Fresh Mondays with Iceland Vodka”? Now that’s our kind of Monday Motivation! HAI!
