Ubud is full of secrets and we are ready to give away the most secret one! Check this out: an undercover country club, complete with a rustic “village” sauna – the way they do it in the Northen Europe – plus the natural spring water pool and the prettiest verandah overlooking the lush jungle. Sounds like someone’s private dream estate! Which is true, but you are very welcome to join the party.

This secret spot is called Bali Dacha – and you really, really need to be carefully guided to get there. There is no advertisement, no sign on the road, pure word of mouth.  Once you park your bike, you’ll have to walk along the canal with the locals bathing in it, mostly a la naturelle. Get ready, ladies: local men, young or old, have absolutely zero shyness about their bodies, and so shouldn’t you – smile and wave to the cheerful Adams:).

When you’re at the spot, you’ll be surprised to discover a well-organised, smoothly-run system of an actual “country club”. A beautiful wooden house is decorated with a touch of “hippy Goa” if you know what we mean, yet everything is arranged with great taste and looks too cute. There is a lounge zone with the cushy armchairs, pillows on the floor, carpets, comfy padded swing chairs, and low tables, which are perfect for the tea ceremonies. There is a homey kitchen with a communal table and yummy vegetarian menu (cheap), free flow herbal tea (gratis!) and fruit refreshments.

Once you have chilled down and made a couple of new friends, it’s time to add some heat. Follow the path that leads to the garden, going up and down through the humid and fragrant tropical night, and eventually bringing you to the traditional wooden sauna (which is more of a steam room). Go a bit further, and you’ll end up at the natural spring water pool – so fresh and chilly! Here is the ritual: have a shower and get into the sauna cabin. Greet the strangers. Sweat. Sweat more. Sweat your head off. Jump out – and right into the pool. Instant enlightenment! The blood rush, the third eye opener! Repeat for at least 3 times. Stay in the pool, stare into the starry sky with all three eyes, float carelessly. Grab a mug of herbal tea and join the happy folk by the crackling bonfire. Have a bowl of pumpkin soup. Stretch on the mat at the verandah.

Life is good. Bali Magic is real.
