When Bali seems like a bustling metropolis (namely on that Canggu shortcut nowadays, hot damn!), what’s your best bet for a little tropical relaxation? Say it with us now: Nusa Lembongan! And as it’s an easy 30-minute boat ride away, Lembongan can make for a quick weekend getaway or a lengthy castaway experience — it’s all about what you’re looking for.
With just a few days to kill on our most recent trip to the tiny island, we wanted a bit of both: to be close enough to the action but tucked away in our own little hideout. And we found a mix so sublime we wanted to pack up our Ubud home and stay awhile longer. It’s called Tigerlillys Boutique Hotel, and it’s Lembongan’s lovely little secret.
Well, maybe not such a secret. When we told our boat captain in Sanur where we were headed, he grinned: “Now *that* is a nice place.”
Tigerlillys is located in the heart of Lembongan’s busiest neighborhood, Jungut Batu, close to countless warungs, cafes, scuba and snorkeling shops, bars and, of course, a long, pristine stretch of beach. But take a step inside and you’ll feel the rest of the island melt away. Six towering palms stand at the entrance like some natural guardians: “Only good vibes past this point.”
Tigerlillys greatest strength is its greenery—it’s totally covered in tropical plants, trees and flowers. There’s no clear view of anything; you’re effectively deep in the Bali jungle while staying in Lembongan’s most accessible neighborhood, and you get to enjoy peace and convenience at the same time.
We laid our heads in Tigerlillys Suite Getaway, a two-floor luxury villa with so much to admire it may be hard to leave and hit the beach. While the Suite is Tigerlillys biggest option, they’ve got 8 rooms in total—several of which are twins, perfect for a luxury trip with friends.
Downstairs, we lounged on a couch and flipped through an impressively diverse DVD collection (Sideways *and* Ace Venture: Pet Detective?!) while dipping into the minibar. As the sun set, we sipped drinks on our front porch—all we could see was green.
Upstairs, a king sized bed dominated the room with a mosquito net that, frankly, was as gorgeous and billowing as it was functional. It’s a bed you could get lost in, and wake up two days later with no idea what happened.
The Suite’s crowning jewel is undeniably it’s bathroom—a huge, open-air, tile-floored beauty that’s bigger than some apartments we’ve lived in (hey, everyone starts somewhere). The bathroom is the stuff dreams are made of, adorned in soothing blues, Beachwood and stone. The two steps down to the shower head mean you’ve got stadium seating for a lover while you get clean. Sorry to make you blush, but the romance of the place can’t be understated. What’s more, Tigerlillys is adults-only. Sorry kids (under 12, that is), this hideaway’s not for you.
But alas, sometimes you have to come up for air, and Tigerlillys pool (with it’s twin goddess fountains) and restaurant will give you the sustenance you need. French press coffee, rich and colorful smoothie bowls and avocado toast with eggs—all the staples you could ask for in an island breakfast. The cafe’s shabby-chic decor—shanti, beaded pillows, hanging pod-seats, floral wall murals—helped stoke an already laid back vibe.
We spent our weekend exploring the gorgeous Nusa Lembongan and its little brother, Nusa Ceningan—Blue Lagoon, Dream Beach, those entangled mangroves, some truly epic sunsets. But believe us when we tell you: Tigerlilly’s put a serene spell on us that was hard to break. We’ll see you back in the jungle.
