This is not your average sushi joint, and that’s a good thing! Tygr Sushi specialises in just-made hand rolls, each individually prepared in front of you with warm, melt-in-your-mouth vinegared rice, super crispy nori and the freshest fillings. Verdict? We’re hooked!
Because good things come in small packages, Tygr Sushi only cook their rice in small batches, so no stale nasi here, no siree! The balance between the flavours of sushi rice and fish are very important. You want to be able to taste both flavours with each bite and these guys have nailed it!
The menu is short and sweet with both a la carte and set-menu options. Don’t know where to start? Try one of their sets that include three to four hand rolls. We had the Tygr Cub set that comes with tuna, snapper and spicy shrimp, our favorite! Vegetarians, you are not left unattended: there is a Veggo Tygr set for you with spicy tofu, jackfruit katsu, cucumber and agedashi. Just remember that once you’ve been handed your first roll, they recommend you take your first bite within ten seconds to get that crispy nori crunch. The dipping sauces are all made fresh onsite. They’re damn good and go well with just about everything they have! We also tried the salmon and tuna sashimi (insanely fresh), scrummy agedashi tofu and the unforgettable karaage fried chicken with sriracha mayo.
Wash it all down with a Sapporo beer or some bottomless iced matcha infused with spirulina. Got room for dessert? Then be sure you try their mochi ice cream. Don’t know what that is? Well, you know that emoji in the food section with the three pastel-coloured balls on a stick? Yup, you guessed it! They’re knock-down delicious, squidgy little spheres of sticky rice with an ice cream filling that’s dairy free and vegan friendly. Needless to say, this little local haunt has become our favourite go-to place to satisfy our sushi and ice cream cravings.
